The social little piggy

Many new guinea pig owners wonder about the social nature of these animals. They often ask whether their guinea pig is fine living alone or if it needs a companion.

Guinea pigs thrive best when kept with another guinea pig or in a group. From my experience, I prefer groups with one male and several females, as this is what I am familiar with. I have three groups of guinea pigs: two groups with one male and five females each, and one group with one male and three females.

All my guinea pigs are neutered and content in their small groups.

Which combinations are most effective?

  • Same sex pairs

  • A neutered male with a small group of females replicates herding behavior observed in the wild (desexed arrangements for domesticated pets).

  • Older and younger piggies paired (a natural hierarchy is established)

Guinea pigs that live in isolation often feel lonely, as they are social creatures that thrive in the company of their own species. While some animals are content as solitary pets and enjoy being alone, guinea pigs are sociable creatures that flourish when they are with others of their kind.

If you have a single guinea pig, I suggest getting them a companion. This could be another guinea pig of the same sex or a neutered one of the opposite sex. For those who prefer not to have their pet desexed, many animal shelters offer guinea pigs that are already neutered. Additionally, shelters often have pairs of guinea pigs that are already bonded, which is a great option. This is what I did for my first two guinea pigs—a mother and daughter pair that didn't require introduction or bonding. For newcomers to guinea pigs, bonding can be intimidating, but it becomes easier and more manageable with experience.

Why is it advisable to be in pairs or small groups?

This is primarily because having the company of a friend or friends makes your guinea pig feel at ease, secure, and content in their surroundings.

Guinea pigs with friends and companions tend to be more social, energetic, and stimulated, promoting their health and vitality. This environment enables them to build relationships and companionship within closely bonded groups, similar to their natural behavior in the wild, where they live in herds. This is an inherent part of their nature.

What is the optimal number of guinea pigs to keep?

To foster strong connections and the social setting that guinea pigs thrive in, it is suggested to keep 3-10 guinea pigs per group. This setup improves their opportunity for social grooming, enhances their happiness from companionship, and reduces stress by being around bonded peers.
